Thats only partially true, when the animation team of Hanna-Barbera created the Flintstones, the only sponsor who had any interest was R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, the makers of Winstons. As time went on and the popularity of it picked up,a lot of different companies came out wanting to sponsor it. And yes,this show was not aimed at kids, and was considered an "adult cartoon".
...is that "The Flintstones" wasn't originally intended as a kids show. All those pop culture references made it obvious it was aimed at adults. When they found out that kids liked it, they switched to a different sponsor.
